Residents appeal Gorham quarry decision

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report May 08, 2008 02:39 PM

GORHAM - Residents are appealing the planning board’s approval of Shaw Brothers Construction’s quarry project off Mosher Road.

Concerned Citizens of Gorham and four town residents filed the complaint against the town and Shaw Brothers in Cumberland County Superior Court last month.

The plaintiffs contend the planning board failed to require Shaw Brothers to provide adequate surface and ground-water data and granted approval to some phases of the project without sufficient data. The plaintiffs also argue that the town’s mineral extraction ordinance is inconsistent with the comprehensive plan.

The 60-acre quarry, as well as an asphalt plant, are planned for 125 acres off Mosher Road, north of Route 25. The plan prompted opposition from residents worried about noise, traffic, pollution and other issues.
