SOUTH PORTLAND - City councilors on Monday will discuss limiting when large oil trucks can travel on the city's main thoroughfare, Broadway, in response to residents' concerns about noise and pedestrian safety.
City Manager James Gailey will present two proposals at the 6:30 p.m. workshop. One option is to ban the heavy trucks from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The other idea is to keep them off the road from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m.
Trucks would still be able to make oil deliveries to homes, however, Gailey said.
Any changes will require state approval because Broadway is state-owned. It may be a hard sell.
"Remember truckers and everybody else using the roads have their rights too and we really don't want to see these restrictions go in on state roads," said Peter Coughlan, director of the community services at the Maine Department of Transportation.
Gailey said upward of 250 rigs pick up oil at South Portland terminals every day and use Broadway to get to the Maine Turnpike.
