A.J. Johnsey, 11, told hundreds of people gathered at the funeral for his father, Portland Police Sgt. Robert Johnsey, that his dad was "one of the best cops in the history of law enforcement."
"He taught me enough stuff in 11 years to last until I'm 99," he said. "He was greatest man I ever knew."
Several hundred police officers and firefighters from throughout the region joined a procession and attended the funeral service.
A number of roads in Portland were closed for a few hours as the funeral procession made its way through the city for the 11 a.m. services at Woodfords Congregational Church, 202 Woodford St.
The roads, including parts of Stevens Avenue and Woodford Street, were expected to be reopened by 12:30.
Johnsey, a highly-respected veteran police officer, died this week when his service weapon accidentally discharged.
The U.S. and Maine flags on Portland municipal buildings are being flown at half-staff today to honor him.
