The state Medical Examiner's office has ruled that Portland Police Sgt. Robert Johnsey died as a result of an accidental gunshot wound to the leg, a state Medical Examiner’s spokesperson said today.

Johnsey bled to death Monday night after his service weapon accidentally discharged as he was getting his utility belt ready for his next day’s work, police said. The Medical Examiner’s office treated the death as suspicious, as is customary, until determining conclusively that it was not.

Johnsey, whose funeral is today, was a nine-year veteran of the force.

Hundreds of police and other public safety personnel are gathering at this hour for a procession and funeral. The funeral is being held at Woodfords Congregational Church at 11 a.m.
