AUGUSTA — Members of the Maine State Employees Association plan to rally at noon Monday in Buker Park to protest what they say are anti-union practices at Medical Care Development, an Augusta based nonprofit.
In a press release, the union alleges that the nonprofit corporation is threatening workers with the loss of their health insurance if they form a union. Medical Care Development provides assisted living services for the elderly and disabled.
“Management has launched tired, old tactics aimed at discouraging workers from exercising their right to form a union,” the MSEA press release states.
Medical Care Development President and CEO John LaCasse said the allegations of threats from management are “absolutely false.”
“We’ve always treated our workers very fairly,” he said. “We give them pensions, health insurance benefits, and many other benefits others don’t provide. We aren’t doing anything for or against what they are doing to unionize.”
