Pipe repairs slow Mount Vernon Avenue traffic

By Kennebec Journal Staff report May 09, 2008 02:22 PM

AUGUSTA — Traffic on Mount Vernon Avenue should be flowing again in both directions by about 4 p.m. today following repairs to pipe under the street near Bond Brook.

Brian Tarbuck, general manager of the Greater Augusta Utility District, said a pressurized wastewater pipe broke Thursday and repairs were completed by 2 p.m. today.

“They’re back-filling it now,” Tarbuck said.

Flaggers let traffic past the repair site one lane at a time, and Pat Jackson trucks pumped out wastewater that flowed in as the repairs were under way.

Tarbuck said the asbestos-cement pipe was installed in the 1960s and is scheduled to be replaced as part of a larger upgrade project in the next several years.
