WASHINGTON — Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins on Friday criticized a House subcommittee’s decision to eliminate funding for a new destroyer that the Navy is seeking.
The House Armed Services Seapower Subcommittee voted unanimously to deny funding the Navy’s request for a third DDG-1000 Zumwalt class destroyer.
Snowe, a Republican, said in a statement that the cuts were “very disappointing.”
Collins, also a Republican, said in a statement that the decision was “ill advised.”
Snowe and Collins said the cuts would hurt Bath Iron Works, which has produced the older DDG-51 Arleigh Burke class destroyer since the 1990s.
The Senate Armed Services Committee has approved funding for a third DDG-1000, setting up a potential dispute between House and Senate lawmakers when they meet in a conference committee to reconcile differences between the two bills.
Bath Iron Works, which is owned by General Dynamics, and Northrop Grumman’s shipyard in Pascagoula, Miss., share production of the two DDG-1000 destroyers that Congress has funded.
The Navy has asked Congress for money to build seven DDG-1000 destroyers as it aims to become a 313-ship fleet.
