By Portland Press Herald Staff Report May 09, 2008 07:30 PM

GORHAM — An elderly Gorham woman was killed in a car accident today after she failed to stop at a stop sign, police said.

The accident took place around 3:15 p.m. as Ida Johnston, 79, was heading south on Libby Avenue. Her car collided with a van going east on New Portland Road, said Officer Wayne Coffin.

Johnston and the van driver, 61-year-old Herman Daniels of Cape Elizabeth, were taken to Maine Medical Center, where the Johnston was pronounced dead, Coffin said. Daniels suffered a wrist injury.

Police are reconstructing the accident. New Portland Road from Bartlett Road to Johnson Road was closed until shortly after 7 p.m.
