GORHAM — An elderly Gorham woman was killed in a car accident today after she failed to stop at a stop sign, police said.
The accident took place around 3:15 p.m. as Ida Johnston, 79, was heading south on Libby Avenue. Her car collided with a van going east on New Portland Road, said Officer Wayne Coffin.
Johnston and the van driver, 61-year-old Herman Daniels of Cape Elizabeth, were taken to Maine Medical Center, where the Johnston was pronounced dead, Coffin said. Daniels suffered a wrist injury.
Police are reconstructing the accident. New Portland Road from Bartlett Road to Johnson Road was closed until shortly after 7 p.m.
