PITTSFIELD — A Sunday morning fire on Madawaska Avenue apparently started when a 19–year–old woman fell asleep while smoking in bed.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, limiting the most serious damage to the room where it started.
Pittsfield Fire Chief Bernard Williams said firefighters arrived less than five minutes after the call went out, shortly before 8 a.m. Teams with airpacks entered the building and were able to contain the fire to the bedroom where it started.
No injuries were reported. With three people in the home at the time, Williams said the outcome could easily have been much worse.
“When she woke up, the bed was all afire,” said Williams.
