AUGUSTA - the U.S.-Canadian border station at Van Buren, which was closed May 1 as a result of flooding, will open to passenger traffic Wednesday at noon, said a statement from Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine.
The Port of Entry will only be open to passenger traffic until tests are completed to ensure the area can support commercial traffic as well
Collins, ranking member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, requested that the office of Customs and Border Protection and the General Services Administration reopen the border crossing as soon as possible.
The northern Maine port was closed when flood water from the St. John River damaged the building and raised uncertainty about the stability of soil supporting the access road and plaza at the port.
Collins said it's critical to those who live and run businesses in the area that the port be reopened to vehicular traffic as soon as possible. She asked that soil tests under the port be expedited.
