Voters give final approval to budget

PITTSFIELD—Voters overwhelmingly on Monday gave final approval to a $10 million budget to run School Administrative District 53.

Residents in Pittsfield, Detroit and Burnham combined to vote 102 to 25 in favor of the budget.

Detroit, whose 14 voters split evenly, was the only individual community not to approve the budget.

The SAD 53 board approved the budget last month. Residents last week initially approved the budget last week without changes before giving final approval on Monday.

The two-part approval process was initiated this year because of new mandates associated with the state's consolidation law.

Town officials said turnout was low in all three communities.

Despite shaving $462,000 in expenditures, a combination of decreased state funding, higher property valuations and declining enrollment means an extra $102,000 will have to be raised in local taxes.

More than $3.3 million of the $10.3 million budget will be raised locally. That represents a 3.19 percent increase over the 2007-08 budget.
