Road damage delays Baxter park opening

By Deirdre Fleming Portland Press Herald Staff Writer May 13, 2008 03:31 PM

Road damage will delay the opening of Baxter State Park, the park announced Tuesday.

Deep snow left from the winter and heavy rains that fell this spring have created numerous washouts on the graveled Park Tote Road, which provides access to campgrounds and to Mount Katahdin trail heads.

The Park Tote Road currently is open from Togue Pond Gate to the foot of Abol Hill and from Matagamon Gate to South Branch Pond Campground.

Trout Brook Farm and South Branch Pond campgrounds should open on schedule May 15.

The opening of all remaining roadside park campgrounds has been pushed back to May 19, except Roaring Brook Campground, which will open on May 23.

The opening date for the two back-country campgrounds has not yet been announced.

Visitors are advised to call park headquarters, at 723-5140.
