Police will be cracking down on seat belt violations later this month as part of a nationwide effort to get more people to wear their seat belts.
From May 19 to June 1, police agencies around the state and nation will take part in a “Click it or Ticket” campaign that will include random safety roadblocks.
Nearly one in five Americans do not regularly wear seat belts, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The problem is worse at night. A study by the NHTSA found that 64 percent of the passengers killed in nighttime traffic crashes were not wearing their seat belts, compared to 46 percent of victims in daytime crashes.
