The history of Maine’s newest town, Chebeague Island, will be the topic of a talk on Monday co-sponsored by the historical societies of Yarmouth and North Yarmouth.

The talk by Donna Miller Damon, an island native and local historian, will be at 7:30 p.m. at the American Legion Log Cabin at 196 Main St. in Yarmouth.

She’ll share stories of early settlers, and the fleet of stone sloops that carried granite and rock all over the East Coast.

Damon also will discuss how population loss and the eventual decline of the industry led to new opportunities as islanders welcomed an increasing number of summer visitors beginning in the middle of the 19th century.

Today, the island population of about 350 year-round residents still swells to 2,000 or more in the summer.

There is no admission fee for the talk but donations are welcomed.
