BRUNSWICK – Capt. Will Fitzgerald assumed command of the Brunswick Naval Air Station Thursday as more than 200 guests looked on during the Navy's traditional change of command ceremony.

Fitzgerald replaces Capt. George Womack, who has spent the last several months preparing the air station for closure.

"This (closure) will demand detailed and determined leadership. I'm confident that Capt. Will Fitzgerald is exactly the right person for the job," Womack said.

Fitzgerald will have the distinction of serving as the base's last commander. The Naval Air Station is scheduled to close no later than September 2011.

Fitzgerald is familiar with Brunswick. He served with the Red Lancers squadron in 1987.

In 2005, he reported to Naples, Italy where he served on the staff of the Naval Forces Europe.

Fitzgerald is married and has four children.
