USM wins; St. Joe's out of D3 baseball regional

Anthony D'Alfonso of Westbrook had three hits and drove in three runs to lead fourth-seeded University of Southern Maine past No. 8 Castleton (Vt.) State 16-7 Thursday in the losers bracket of the double-elimination NCAA Division III New England Regional baseball tournament in Harwich, Mass.

The Huskies (33-13) will play another elimination game Friday at 1 p.m. against the loser of tonight's Keene State-Wheaton contest.

Following the USM victory, No. 6 St. Joseph's College dropped its second game and was eliminated by No. 7 Worcester (Mass.) State, 14-4. The Monks finish 28-18.

The winner of the eight-team tournament advances to the Division III national tournament May 22-26 in Appleton, Wisc.
