Portland’s Fred P. Hall Elementary School is 50 years old and the school is holding an anniversary bash tomorrow to celebrate. The event will feature live music and other performances, storytelling, carnival games, multicultural activities and special birthday cupcakes.

The 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. event will be held at the school at 23 Orono Road. Admission is free. Hall families, staff, alumni and community members are all invited to attend.

The celebration will include a salute to the school’s past. There will be a historical presentation giving details about the life of the late Fred P. Hall Jr., the former Deering district school superintendent for whom the school is named. Students also will put on a musical review in which they will sing songs they wrote about Fred Hall.

But the event will also celebrate the school as it is today, with a diverse student body of about 470 students in kindergarten through fifth grade. There will be storytelling in nine of the different languages spoken in the school’s hallways, and students will demonstrate the ability to count in 10 different languages, including American Sign Language.

Ethnic food also will be sold. The Blueberry Pancakes, a steel drum band made up of school parents, staff and students, will perform.

The anniversary bash is sponsored by the school’s parent-teacher organization.
