LIMINGTON - The York County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the shooting Tuesday afternoon of a $4,000 race horse in Limington. The injured horse had to be put down because of its injuries.
Sheriff's deputies returned to the Limington farm today to search for clues, but York County Sheriff Maurice Ouellette said officers had very little information to work from. The farm is in a large, secluded area.
"It's such a large area," Ouellette said. "(The owner) can't tell us from what direction the shot came."
Meanwhile, Peggy Tardif, the horse's owner, has upped her reward from $500 to $1,500 for information leading to the person who shot the animal.
Tardif reported she heard the shot about 4 p.m. Tuesday while cleaning out stalls. But it wasn't until an hour later, while bringing food to the horse, that she discovered the animal had been shot.
The farm is near a state sanctuary, so no one should have been hunting in the area, Ouellette said. Authorities believe it was an intentional shooting.
Anyone with information is asked to call the York County Sheriff's Office at 1-800-670-7553.
