The 17 towns covered by the Cumberland County regional communications center are back to having their 911 calls go directly to county dispatchers.
The 911 calls were transferred to the state dispatch facility in Gray after the county’s 911 system shut down last weekend. The state ordered that the 911 calls continue to go through the Gray facility until state officials were confident the problem had been fixed.
County communications director Bill Holmes said the problem has been repaired and the 911 system was shifted back to the county at 1 p.m. today.
The county previously performed multiple tests to make sure it was working and then had several actual 911 calls since the switch, including a fire in Raymond this afternoon, and the system performed as expected.
The county also has a mechanism installed to allow it to immediately route 911 calls to the state if there is a problem in the future, without encountering the lengthy delays that plagued the switch to the backup system this weekend.
Holmes also said an inquiry into calls made about Tuesday’s fatal fire in Gorham determined there was no problem with callers getting through to the state facility on 911, and the calls were all transferred rapidly and without problems to the county facility that dispatched firefighters.
