WATERVILLE -- In a game with only five hits combined by the two teams, Maranacook edged Waterville, 4-2, in Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B softball action Monday afternoon.
Waterville got both of its hits in the first inning, as Taylor Hart doubled and Jess Boucher singled. The Purple Panthers scored two runs that inning for a 2-1 lead.
Maranacook had all three of its hits in the fifth inning, as singles by Shelley Ouellette, Ally Kennedy and Sarah Maxwell helped the Black Bears to two runs and a 4-2 lead.
Maxwell made the lead stand up by retiring 20 of the last 22 batters she faced and 13 in a row at one point. Maxwell struck out nine and got five batters on comebackers to the mound.
