City seeks grant for wind turbine at school

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report May 30, 2008 04:22 PM

The city of Portland and its school department are seeking a grant to have a wind turbine installed at the East End Community School.

The grant is offered by Efficiency Maine, a program of the Maine Public Utilities Commission.

The school, which opened two years ago, overlooks Portland's Eastern Promenade and breezy Casco Bay.

Douglas Sherwood, school facilities manager, said a wind turbine at the school would meet the required average wind speed of 13.4 mph, but not the electrical demand of 500 kilowatt-hours.

"We could always become an energy generator," Sherwood said in a memo to the school committee.

Efficiency Maine would provide and install the 100-foot tower, which would require a waiver of the city's height restriction if it's free-standing, Sherwood said.

The application is due June 30.
