CAPE ELIZABETH — The 10 students who vandalized Cape Elizabeth High School this spring all have signed behavior contracts that allow them to avoid criminal charges, according to Cumberland County District Attorney Stephanie Anderson.
The students faced a Friday deadline to sign the contracts, which will be in effect until Jan. 15. They require the students to perform 60 hours of community service, pay $1,443.94 each in restitution and adhere to an 11 p.m. curfew.
The students also must avoid any civil or criminal offenses and must notify Anderson’s office if they are charged or subject to school disciplinary action.
The restitution amount was based on the amount of damage at the school, Anderson said.
The students broke into the high school on March 24 as part of a senior prank.
Anderson said that the damage, which included the removal of ceiling tiles, piling desks on top of each other and smearing surfaces with peanut butter, was not as bad as initially reported.
