New foot bridges planned for Bridgton

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report June 09, 2008 12:38 PM

BRIDGTON — Pondicherry Park supporters are planning to build two pedestrian bridges to the downtown park, with one to be named after a late local craftsman, environmentalist and community leader.

The Bob Dunning Memorial Bridge over Stevens Brook will serve as the main entry from downtown. The bridge, with a span of 60 feet, was designed to highlight natural materials and have a traditional look.

The south bridge over Willett Brook will provide access for Stevens Brook Elementary School and the S.A.D. #61 Learning Center. The bridge will have a span of about 45 feet.

Two fundraising events are planned to help construct the bridge. The Telluride Mountain Film Festival will be held at the Magic Lantern on June 24. A barn sale will be held June 28, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., at 76 High St.

The TD Charitable Foundation recently gave $5,000 to Pondicherry Park.

Lakes Environmental Association and the Loon Echo Land Trust are leading the park campaign.
