Windham school seats go to incumbents

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report June 10, 2008 09:32 PM

The three incumbents in the Windham School Committee race beat back challenges from two other candidates to win re-election Tuesday.

Michael Duffy, a disability benefits specialist at Unum, Kate Brix, a board member of the nonprofit organization Affinity, and Stuart “Toby’’ Pennels, a stockbroker and colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves, each won a third term. Duffy had 1,308 votes, Brix had 1,302 votes and Pennels had 1,096.

Challengers Marge Govoni, a school aide, and Rosalyn Webb, a program manager for the Digestive Disease Department and the Maine Digestive Health Center at Maine Medical Center, had 840 votes and 753 votes, respectively.

Test scores, the need to find cost savings and the evaluation of programming and teachers were among the issues in the race.
