Residents supported the Westbrook school budget by a two-to-one margin Tuesday.
The vote was 1,359 in support of the proposed $30.99 million school budget and 680 against.
The budget represents a 5.83 percent increase over the current school budget. The resulting increase in the amount funded by local property taxes is lower – 1.4 percent – because of various state reimbursements the city will receive.
More than half of the budget increase comes from $838,000 in debt service for a new middle school and the district’s new responsibilities in providing oversight for students at four hospitals. The state will fully reimburse the oversight costs of $80,000.
About 2.5 percent of the increase stems largely from increased costs for utilities, negotiated wages and benefits.
The combined municipal, school and county budget of $53.8 million is expected to increase property taxes about 1 percent, to $15.60 per $1,000 of assessed valuation.
