AUGUSTA — Maine voters have approved a bond package of nearly $30 million to pay for improvements to roads, bridges, dams, landfills and other public facilities.
On Tuesday´s ballot was the third part of a borrowing package worth up to $295 million that the Legislature voted in 2007 to send to voters in three separate pieces. The previous two portions were approved.
Of the total borrowed, $23 million would be for transportation projects, including highway and bridge improvements, passenger and freight rail, transit and bus facilities, ferry, port and airport improvements and bicycle and pedestrian trails.
The bonds would also pay for improvements at a Coast Guard facility, the state fish hatchery and dams. Remaining money would go to clean up hazardous waste sites, among other things.
Unofficial results show the bond measure failed in Waterville and Fayette in Kennebec County.
