Search resumes for missing fisherman

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report June 12, 2008 09:40 AM

MATTAWAMKEAG — A search has resumed a missing fisherman whose boat was swamped by water from a dam on the Penobscot River last night, say Maine Warden Service officials.

Wardens suspended their search shortly after midnight because of high fast water, but were back at the river at 9 a.m. searching for Wayne Crosby of East Millinocket.

Officials say Crosby was fishing below the dam with his brother Mark and a friend, Gilbert Chaboux, when the boat was swamped with water around 8:45 last night. Authorities said the men are in their 40s.

The boat, a 20-foot Scott boat with a six-horsepower Johnson motor, was approximately 20 yards from the falls below the dam, which is located off Route 157, when its engine went out. The falls created a reverse hydraulic, and the force from it pulled the boat under the falls and back out again, according to Sgt. Kevin Adam.

The three men were thrown from the boat. Chaboux made it to shore and was transported to Penobscot Valley Hospital in Lincoln by Lincoln Fire and Rescue.

Mark Crosby, the brother, was rescued from the water about an hour after the incident occurred, according to Sgt. Adam. He was able to keep himself above water on a small island. He also is at Penobscot Valley Hospital.

Wayne Crosby, however, has not been seen since he was thrown from the boat.
