A Cape Elizabeth High School graduate enrolled at Dartmouth College is free on bail after being indicted on four counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault by a New Hampshire grand jury.
Daniel Shedd, 18, graduated from high school last year and is the son of high school principal Jeffrey Shedd. He is scheduled to go to trial in September.
Daniel Shedd is charged with assaulting a woman on or about Oct. 26 to Oct. 27 in Hanover, N.H., where Dartmouth is located, according to court papers.
Lara Saffo, assistant district attorney for Grafton County, would provide no details about the circumstances of the incident.
Shedd is free on his own personal recognizance while awaiting trial.
His attorney, Andru H. Volinsky, said the woman was visiting Shedd when the incident occurred.
“He has known the young woman for quite a while,” he said. “The charge was both a shock and devastating to him and his family,” Volinsky said. He said Shedd has not yet had a chance to challenge the charges but will at trial.
Jeffrey Shedd could not be reached for comment.
