Pemaquid lighthouse finalist for facelift

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report June 16, 2008 05:00 PM

The public can help select a lighthouse for restoration from a list of 12 national finalists in the JELD-WED Windows and Doors contest.

Maine’s Pemaquid Point Lighhouse is one of the 12 finalists.

The windows company, JELD-WEN, selected the dozen lighthouses in need of repair from nominations that came in across the country.

The only other New England lighthouse selected as a finalist is Rhode Island’s Rose Island Lighthouse.

Last year, Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse on Chesapeake Bay received new windows and doors after winning the JELD-WEN contest called, Reliable Lighthouse Restoration Initiative.

The public is invited again to pick a lighthouse in need of repair, and asked to pick the most reliable lighthouse.

Each person can cast one vote before Sept. 7 by visiting www.jeld-wen.com/lighthouse.

“It was challenging to select 12 finalists,” said Lynne Butterworth, lighthouse project manager for JELD-WEN. “We received more than 65 individual nominations, representing 49 of the nation’s most historic and renowned lighthouses from coast to coast. That’s why we need the public’s support to help us choose the winning lighthouse.”
