Mere Point Road in Brunswick will be reconstructed next year, a project that Town Manager Donald Gerrish said has been discussed for years.

The town council on Monday night authorized borrowing up to $1.3 million to reconstruct a 2.5-mile-long section of the two-lane road that ends at a private compound known as Sea Point.

Public Works Director John Foster said there are no plans to widen the two-lane road, though existing shoulders will be paved to expand the roadway from 22 to 26 feet.

Town officials said a concept plan will be developed before it is presented for input at a public hearing. The construction work should get under way in the spring of 2009.

The improved road will be the only access to a new boat launch on Mere Point, which is nearly ready to open.
