Brunswick's Planning Board has given a Massachussetts-based development firm two years to build Maine Street Station, a $25 million retail, office and housing project that is expected to create 250 new jobs and bring thousands of visitors into downtown Brunswick.

Town Planner Jim Fortune said the Planning Board voted 7-0 Tuesday night to approve the final site plan for Maine Street Station.

Fortune said the project will feature a 60-room inn on the site of what is now used as The People Plus Center. Maine Street Station will also include a 1,200-square foot train station and boarding platform, 16 condominiums, 39,000 square feet of office space and more than 26,000 square feet of retail space.

Under the terms approved by the Planning Board, JHR Development of Maine will also be required to pay for installation of a traffic light at Maine and McKeen streets.

The developer will also help pay for traffic improvements around the First Parish Church, which will be situated across the street from the three-story inn. The town will have up to three years to design those improvements.

Contruction will begin as soon as JHR Development receives permits from the Maine Department of Transportation and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.

Fortune said town ordinances require that the project be completed no later than June 24, 2010.
