The State Fire Marshal's Office said this afternoon that a couple from Florida have been critically burned following an explosion and fire at a lake-front camp in Lincoln early this morning.
Investigators say 56-year-old Linda Smith and 51-year-old Rick Pedley are being treated at Massachusetts General Hospital with burns to over 60% of their bodies, Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said in an afternoon release.
Nearby residents began calling fire and police just after 1 a.m. reporting an explosion on Upper Cold Stream Ponds.
When emergency personnel arrived at the camp, off McGregor Road, they found the injured couple in the water, where they had jumped to escape the fire, according to McCausland.
Both were initially taken to the Lincoln hospital. They were later flown by helicopter to Boston.
The hometowns of the two were not immediately known.
Fire Investigators say the camp was leveled in the fire and they are looking at the gas heater or gas stove as a possible cause of the blaze.
The camp is owned by Pedley's father, who is from the Lincoln area. McCausland said.
