New sculptures go up in Portland this week

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report June 25, 2008 06:02 PM

A Maine artist is scheduled to begin installing two pieces of her work at a spot near Back Cove in Portland this week.

City officials announced this afternoon that Vivian Beer will begin installing two sculptures, Cloud Beach and Rustle, at Winslow Park this week. The metal structures were recently acquired by the Portland Public Art Committee.

Beer, who grew up in Ellsworth and graduated from Maine College of Art in Portland, will be on hand to discuss her work at a ceremony scheduled for 2 p.m. tomorrow at the park, located at the intersection of Baxter Boulevard and Preble Street extension.

Her artwork was chosen by residents, business leaders, artists and public art committee members.

Beer’s works replace Clark Fitzgerald’s “Milkweed Pod,” a wooden sculpture that stood in Winslow Park until it was damaged in a storm nearly two years ago.
