Settlement reached on alcoholic energy drinks

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report June 26, 2008 02:22 PM

AUGUSTA – Maine Attorney General Steven Rowe announced this afternoon a national agreement by Anheuser-Busch, Inc., to stop producing two caffeinated alcoholic beverages, Bud Extra and Tilt.

Rowe and five other state attorneys general who participated in an investigation of the alcoholic energy drinks alleged that the St. Louis-based brewer was marketing the beverages to people under age 21.

They cited Anheuser-Busch advertising with slogans such as "You can sleep when you're 30," and "Go home with more than a burrito tonight."

During a conference call with reporters, Rowe said that roughly 10-15 other companies are currently marketing pre-mixed alcoholic energy drinks. He called on those companies to follow Anheuser-Busch's lead.
