Man's body found in Saco River

By The Associated Press wire report July 02, 2008 01:45 PM

The body of a 33-year-old Baldwin man has been found in the Saco River a day after he got swept away in the current while swimming across the river.

The body of Stephen Hawks was found at around 11 a.m. today about 150 yards downstream from where he had been swimming.

The Maine Warden Service said Hawks went missing about 4 p.m. Tuesday while swimming with his wife below the Hiram Falls Dam in Hiram, whihc is in Oxford County.

Warden Service Lt. Adam Gormely said the current apparently was too strong for Hawks, but his wife made it back to shore safely.

Wardens say Maine's rivers are running faster than usual because of recent thunderstorms.
