Real ID repeal: Short on time, not support

The leader of a group seeking to repeal Maine lawmakers' decision to comply with federal Real ID standards says volunteers collecting signatures are finding high levels of support.

But the group's leaders still are unsure they will be able to meet the required signature threshold to land a question on November's ballot.

"If we don't, I think we'll be close," said Kathleen McGee, a Bowdoinham resident.

Approximately 80 percent of people approached by signature gatherers are willing to sign a petition to bring a question before voters in November that, if passed, would repeal the law legislators passed in their 2008 session.

If the effort ultimately succeeds, drivers' license applicants would not have to prove they legally reside in the United States in order to be granted a Maine driver's license.

McGee said volunteers will target celebrations across the state on Friday, Independence Day, in a signature-gathering push. They will continue throughout the weekend.

The Secretary of State is requiring McGee’s group and other people’s veto proponents to submit 55,087 signatures, totaling a third of votes cast in the 2006 gubernatorial election, by July 17.

If Real ID repeal proponents do not ultimately collect enough signatures, McGee said, it will be due to a lack of time.

"It's not because we don't have the support," she said.
