WINSLOW — Waterville and Winslow firefighters worked together on Thursday afternoon to rescue two men whose canoe had rolled over, a short distance below the Lockwood Dam.
Chuck Cleaver, 87, of Skowhegan and Fred Heald, 59, of Norridgewock were in the fast-flowing Kennebec for at least half an hour, according to Dan Michaud, assistant Winslow fire chief. Both men declined hospitalization.
Michaud said that Lt. Scott Higgins and firefighter Jeff Reny rescued the men in a “Sea-doo,” a type of rescue jet ski, about 50 yards from the Waterville shoreline. Higgins and Reny took Cleaver and Heald to the Winslow shoreline at the foot of Fort Halifax Park, more than 200 yards from the spot they fill in.
“They hung onto the boat, the had life jackets on. They did the right things and everybody’s safe,” Michaud said. “If they had gone into the river, the current would have taken them well downstream.”
