New casino has record-breaking day

By The Associated Press wire report July 04, 2008 09:43 AM

Penn National Gaming had a record-breaking day for the grand opening of its new Hollywood Slots casino in Bangor.

Company officials say an estimated 9,000 people tried their luck at Tuesday's opening of its new $132 million gambling and entertainment complex.

The new facility replaces Penn National's temporary slot machine hall that operated down the street since November 2005.

According to Robert Welch, executive director of the Maine Gambling Control Board, the new Hollywood Slots on Tuesday roughly doubled its best day at the previous site.

The new facility has 1,000 slot machines, more than double the 475 machines at the old facility. It also has a 1,500-spot parking garage and a 152-room hotel that is slated to open later this summer.
