AUGUSTA -- Two Waterboro motorcycle operators were transported to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta Saturday afternoon after their bikes collided on Summerhaven Road.

Daryl Lovejoy, 48, was attempting to pass a pick-up truck in the left lane of the road when the pick-up truck shifted into the left lane, Augusta police Sgt. Mark Desjardin said.

When Lovejoy shifted back into the right lane to avoid the truck, a motorcycle driven by Rose Lovejoy, 47, collided with the rear of Daryl Lovejoy's motorcycle, Desjardin said.

Both bikes fell on their sides as a result of the collision, he said.

The accident occurred approximately a quarter-mile from the intersection of U.S. Route 27 and Summerhaven Road, Desjardin said. Police received report of the accident shortly after 1 p.m.

Rose Lovejoy, who was riding a 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle, was transported to the hospital with injuries to her head and left side. Daryl Lovejoy was taken to the hospital after reporting injuries to his right arm and collar bone, Desjardin said.

"They didn't appear life-threatening," he said late Saturday afternoon.

MaineGeneral officials did not confirm either operator was admitted to the facility.

Neither rider was wearing a helmet, he said.

Rose Lovejoy's bike sustained approximately $1,000 in damage. Daryl Lovejoy's bike sustained at least $2,000 in damage, Desjardin said.

Police closed Summerhaven Road to traffic for approximately 30 minutes while emergency personnel responded to the scene, Desjardin said.
