Kevin Eastler struggled with injuries all season, hindering his training and jeopardizing his bid to make the U.S. Olympic team in the 20k racewalk.
But Saturday morning, the 30-year-old Farmington native won the 20k racewalk in the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore., earning his second Olympic berth.
Eastler, who suffered through a deep sports hernia and then knee problems this year, finished the race in 1:27:07.1, well ahead of second-place finisher Matthew Boyles, who came in at 1:28:19.1.
Eastler was the top seed entering the event and was the only American to have made the Olympic A standard. He will be the lone U.S. representative in Beijing, with his race taking place on Aug. 16 at the National Stadium.
This will be Eastler's second Olympic appearance. He finished 21st in the 20k racewalk in the Athens Games in 2004.
Eastler is the sixth Maine native to qualify for the Olympics, joining steeplechaser Anna Willard of Greenwood, mountain biker Adam Craig of Exeter and rowers Wyatt Allen of Portland, Anna Goodale of Camden and Elle Logan of Boothbay Harbor.
