IN THE WEATHER

foggy7:07.jpg
At 9 a.m., downtown Portland was partly foggy and 67 degrees. As the day progresses, the sun promises to burn off the fog, seen here shrouding the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Franklin Arterial.

All this makes for a very hot, very muggy day, with temperatures in the upper 80s, low 90s and not much breeze to help take off the edge. Sunscreen and breathable fabrics recommended.

The Sunrise Herald WEATHER WATCHERS report.
overcast.gif From Bill in Rockland: Calm and 62 degrees in Rockland at 5:30 a.m. Very foggy and quiet - a long way to go to get to the sparkling quality of yesterday.
overcast.gif From Shawn in Yarmouth: This morning in Yarmouth, it is 64 degrees, very foggy and humid (guess that is kind of the same thing). No wind. The birds are very noisy in my neighborhood this morning, not sure why...and wait, it is getting brighter, so that fog that rolled in last night might burn off!
overcast.gif From James in Cape Elizabeth: At 6:30 a.m., it is 61 degrees with some sunny fog here in Cape Elizabeth. Quite pleasant outside but me thinks that won't last long! Great to be back online!

ON THE ROAD:

• Construction begins today on two bridges along Route 302 in Fryeburg. The work will include pavement removal, concrete surface repairs, joint repairs, curb installation, etc. Note that there will be delays and alternating one-lane traffic until late August on:

Walker's Bridge, which spans the Saco River and is four miles west of the Bridgton town line.

Osgood Bridge, which is located 4.2 miles east of Route 5 on Route 302 and crosses Dead Lake Stream.

• ON THE MAINE TURNPIKE: Between mile 24 in Kennebunk and mile 32 in Biddeford, both north and southbound lane closures are scheduled from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. for road work.

ON THE OCEAN:

A hazy, partly foggy day on the water, with southwest winds blowing 5 to 10 knots with seas 1 to 2 feet.

High tide in Portland was at 2:47 a.m. and will be again at 3:27 p.m. Low tide will be 9:08 a.m. and then again at 9:28 p.m.

THE NEWEST NEWS:

STANDISH (AP) -- A Standish man faces multiple charges after allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase that reached speeds of 100 mph with an 18-month-old girl in his car.

Maine State Police say 23-year-old Anthony Alfiero sped off after giving a false name when he was pulled over Saturday on Interstate 95 in Bangor.

Alfiero allegedly tried to outrun police through three towns before he ended up on a dead-end street in Veazie.

There, police say Alfiero abandoned the car with his girlfriend and her 18-month-old daughter in it, but it kept rolling another 50 or 60 feet before striking several trees and coming to a stop. Alfiero jumped into the Penobscot River before being arrested.

Charges include aggravated reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, endangering the welfare of a child, driving to endanger and eluding police.

SANFORD -- Shawn Dennis, 24, of Portland was slapped with arson charges, and a bad set of burns, after officials say he set fire to a 10-apartment complex by setting off fireworks early Sunday morning.

Firefighters were called to the building at 907 Main St. for reports of fireworks going off. When they arrived, white smoke was pouring from the third floor of the complex.

"Someone had lit a box off in the bathroom," said Sanford Fire Captain Gary Cushing. "It was 9 by 9 by 9. One of those kinds with 25 tubes in it."

Despite the fact that the fireworks shot out of the box and burned through the ceiling into the attic space above, there was little fire damage due to the sprinkler system that kicked in at the first sign of smoke.

Firefighters spent most of their time mitigating water damage. Meanwhile, officials found Dennis walking down the street with burns on his hands, back and feet. He was taken to the hospital and then charged with arson.
