A man convicted of shooting a South Portland police officer has been sentenced to 35 years in prison.

Terrel Dubois, who was convicted in March of shooting South Portland Officer Steve Connors on Oct. 11, 2006, was sentenced this morning by Cumberland County Superior Court Justice Joyce Wheeler.

Dubois was sentenced for three crimes: kidnapping his former girlfriend, dealing drugs and attempted murder in the shooting of Connors. The shootout happened as police closed in on Dubois at a South Portland apartment to arrest him on the kidnapping charge.

Connors was hit in the hand, shoulder and chest and another shot grazed his skull.

South Portland Chief Ed Googins said the sentence is appropriate for someone who was bent on disobeying the law and willing to take on anyone who tried to hold him accountable.
