Republican U.S. Sen. Susan Collins leads her challenger, Democratic U.S. Rep. Tom Allen, by a 56 to 31 percent margin in her bid for re-election, according to a statewide poll released today.

Thirteen percent of those polled said they were undecided.

Support for Collins was strongest among residents of northern and Down East Maine, where 62 percent said they would vote or were leaning toward voting for her.

She also had the support of 75 percent of Republicans and 58 percent of unenrolled voters.

Fifty percent of southern Maine voters and 39 percent of Democrats said they would vote or were leaning toward voting for Collins.

The results were gathered from June 10-18 by Pan Atlantic SMS Group in a statewide telephone poll of 400 Maine adults who said they were likely to vote in the Nov. 4 election.

The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percent at the 95 percent confidence level.
