By Portland Press Herald Staff Report July 08, 2008 01:18 PM

HANOVER — A 30-year-old man suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries in an accident along Route 2 in Hanover this morning.

Joshua Wheeler, of Rumford, was driving a van west on Route 2, when he veered into the eastbound lane hitting a tractor trailer head on, said Corporal Chancey Libby, of the Oxford County Sheriff's Office. The driver of the tractor trailer attempted to swerve away from the van but ended up hitting a guardrail, Libby said.

Wheeler was airlifted to Central Maine Medical Center with cuts to his head and broken bones, Libby said. The driver of the truck, Laurent Gilbert, 48, of Quebec, was taken to Rumford Hospital with minor injuries.

The accident caused a large fuel spill along Route 2. Authorities estimated between 50 to 100 gallons of diesel fuel, about 30 gallons of hydraulic fluid and an unknown amount of engine oil spilled onto the road. The truck was carrying woodchips, which also spilled, which required a large clean-up effort, Libby said.

As of 1 p.m. today, Route 2 was still closed. Libby said the road would probably remain closed for the next couple of hours.
