UPDATE: Maine amateur golf tournament underway

SACO - Thirteen-time Maine Amateur champion Mark Plummer of Manchester made the turn at 3-under par in the opening round of the Maine Amateur Golf Championship Tuesday at Biddeford-Saco Country Club.

Gardiner High schoolboy standout Ryan Gay shot a 4-under par 67 in the first round. Gay, who will be a senior at Gardiner, was in the first group of the day with defending champion Eric Higgins of West Kennebunk and Joe Alvarez of Hampden. Higgins said he struggled in shooting a 75. Alvarez had a 74.

There are 126 players in the tournament which continues Wednesday and Thursday.
