A day after the Freeport School Committee voted down a three-town plan for consolidation, Freeport Superintendent Elaine Tomaszewski said the vote came as a surprise.
The 3-2 vote against the plan to consolidate schools in Freeport, Durham and Pownal prevented the plan from being sent on for review by Maine Commissioner of Education Susan Gendron.
"It was somewhat (of a surprise)," Tomaszewski said. "Durham approved it and sent it to the commissioner, and Pownal approved it and sent it to the commissioner."
In addition, the plan was unanimously approved on June 25 by the Reorganization Planning Committee, which has representatives of all three towns.
Tomaszewski said in the next week she will meet with the Freeport School Committee to find out what parts of the plan need to be revised for it to pass.
