WHITEFIELD — A local 11-year-old was awarded a $1,000 scholarship through a national department store's program recognizing young people who make a difference in their communities by volunteering.
Dylan McMahon, of Whitefield, is one of nearly 200 youths recognized nationwide through Kohl's Department Stores' Kids Who Care Scholarship Program.
Dylan raised money to purchase school supplies for more than 300 underprivileged school children in Haiti, according to a news release from Kohl's. He will receive a $1,000 scholarship toward his postsecondary education.
The winners were announced Wednesday.
"Today's winners truly are role models in their local communities," Julie Gardner, Kohl's executive vice president and chief marketing officer, said in the release.
Winners were selected based on initiative, leadership, creativity and generosity. Today's regional winners are now being considered for one of 10 national scholarships worth $5,000.
