Seventeen-year-old Ryan Gay of Pittston came from three shots back to win the Maine Amateur Golf Championship today with an impressive final round 68 at Biddeford-Saco Country Club.

Gay won by two shots over Mark Plummer, a 13-time champion, from Manchester. Gay finished at 5-under 208 for the 54-hole tournament. Plummer shot a final round 72 to finish at 210. Second round leader Ricky Jones of Thomaston struggled with a 76 and was third at 213.

Gay, who'll be a senior at Gardiner High this fall, made five birdies and had a 4-shot lead on Plummer on the 18th tee. Gay made double bogey on the final hole when his second shot went well over the green and he took four to get down. It was his only mistake of the day.

"I played flawlessy until 18," said Gay, who is believed to be tied for the second youngest winner of the tournament, which began in 1918.
