Gov. John Baldacci, during a Friday afternoon press conference at the Portland International Jetport, put the property damage from the fire that destroyed the Washburn & Doughty shipyard in East Boothhbay at $30 million.
Baldacci who was about to catch a flight to Philadelphia where he was scheduled to attend the National Governors Association conference said the fire put about 100 people out of work.
The governor, who spoke with owners of the shipyard, said they have no timeframe for getting their tugboat building operation back on line. But he did say that representatives from the Department of Labor's Rapid Response team would visit the site Monday to offer assistance.
Tim Hodgdon, a nearby business owner, has offered building space and assistance to Washburn and Doughty.
Baldacci said he plans to tour the facilty at 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
"Our hearts go out to the people who work there," the governor said. "We are thankful that no one lost their life."

EAST BOOTHBAY -- A major fire that destroyed the Washburn & Doughty shipyard is under control.

Firefighters from several towns are fighting a major fire at the Washburn & Doughty shipyard. The fire started around 9 a.m. It is unclear whether it began in a tugboat that is currently under construction, or elsewhere in the shipyard, authorities said.
There was a large explosion at 10:23 a.m., according to Ron Riml, a retired police officer who lives 300 yards away.
"First all I saw was smoke coming from the top, then flames coming out of the top, and now it appears like the thing is fully involved," Riml said at the time of the explosion.
Bruce Washburn, one of the partners in the business, said none of the
shipyard's 85 employees was injured. A couple of firefighters were treated for minor injuries, officials said.
Washburn declined to speculate on possible causes, or say what workers were
doing at the time the fire started. He did say the shipyard is insured.
Gov. John Baldacci was briefed about the fire by the Maine Emergency Management Agency, which is closely monitoring the situation. Response teams from the Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Labor have been activated. The departments of Economic and Community Development and the Conservation are also standing by to respond.
