SCARBOROUGH - An 18-year-old woman from Belarus died Wednesday from injuries suffered in a bicycle-car accident along Route 1 in Scarborough last week, according to the Scarborough police.

Sviatlana Auseichyk was riding a bicycle south on Route 1 on July 3, when she attempted to cross the road diagonally and was struck by a car also traveling south on the road, said Scarborough police officer Don Laflin. The car was driven by Peter Juarez, 20, of Scarborough. He and his passenger were not injured.

The accident happened just north of the Saco line in Scarborough on the evening of July 3. Auseichyk was transported to Maine Medical Center, where she died on Wednesday, Laflin said.

Scarborough police are still investigating the accident, Laflin said.

Highway deaths for the year now stand at 81, five fewer than last year at this time, according to the Maine State Police. In the first 11 days of July, nine people lost their lives on Maine roads, state police said.
